MYNA Project represented the Center for International Studies (CEI-Iscte) at the Lisbon 2024 European Researcher\u2019s Night<\/a><\/strong>. This yearly EU-wide science outreach event<\/a><\/strong> took place at the Museu Nacional de Hist\u00f3ria Natural e da Ci\u00eancia<\/a><\/strong> (MUHNAC) on September 27th, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We invited the public to travel to the savannas of east Africa and steppes and mountains of inner Asia through a multisensory ethnographic exhibit that combined a tasting of sweet and salty milk teas with a slideshow of fieldwork photography.
Chai<\/em> and s\u00fc\u00fctei tsai<\/em> are key staples in the daily lives of Kenyan and Mongolian pastoralists. Kenyan Maasai chai<\/em> is made of cow\u2019s or sheep’s milk, black tea leaves, sugar and sometimes spices or medicinal herbs. The Mongolian s\u00fc\u00fctei tsai<\/em> is made with cow’s milk, black, green or herbal tea leaves, toasted millet and gem salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t

On a cold and windy night, adults and children lined up for a second and third cup of hot tea, served in local utensils and accompanied by Mongolian yak cheese curds. This sensory experience promoted a dialogue around milk, food, modernity and tradition, pastoral lives, environmental, religious and other cultural changes faced by dryland communities, and the global ecosystem services provided by mobile livestock production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
