MYNA Project represented the Center for International Studies (CEI-Iscte) at the Lisbon 2024 European Researcher’s Night. This yearly EU-wide science outreach event took place at the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC) on September 27th, 2024.
We invited the public to travel to the savannas of east Africa and steppes and mountains of inner Asia through a multisensory ethnographic exhibit that combined a tasting of sweet and salty milk teas with a slideshow of fieldwork photography.
Chai and süütei tsai are key staples in the daily lives of Kenyan and Mongolian pastoralists. Kenyan Maasai chai is made of cow’s or sheep’s milk, black tea leaves, sugar and sometimes spices or medicinal herbs. The Mongolian süütei tsai is made with cow’s milk, black, green or herbal tea leaves, toasted millet and gem salt.
On a cold and windy night, adults and children lined up for a second and third cup of hot tea, served in local utensils and accompanied by Mongolian yak cheese curds. This sensory experience promoted a dialogue around milk, food, modernity and tradition, pastoral lives, environmental, religious and other cultural changes faced by dryland communities, and the global ecosystem services provided by mobile livestock production.
