Dr. Batbuyan Batjav, one of our team’s geographers and the director of the NGO Center for Nomadic Pastoralism Studies, conducted fieldwork in the Gobi desert. Spending 16 days in August 2023 in the Khankongor District (soum) of Umnugovi Province, he investigated the multiple dimensions of ovoos, interviewed herders about their relationship with these religious structures; and explored a potential connection between a visible increase in ovoos since the 1990s, when Mongolia became a democracy, and informal processes of privatization of grazing resources by pastoralists.
