Joana presented a paper in the Fourth Environmental Anthropology Annual Meeting, at the University of Coimbra, Portugal (30 Sept. – 1 Oct. 2023). The paper, included in the Multi-Species Anthropology session and entitled Ilpuli leCorona: Maasai meat camps at the intersection of Pentecostalism and a pandemic, argues that the pandemic brought Maasai pastoralists closer to their animals and pastoralism, and examines the ways in which the Maasai institution of olpul (meat camp) was revived during the COVID-19 lockdown. The paper also discussed how meat camps accommodated the religious beliefs and food practices of their Pentecostal Christian participants.
